Security & Data Removal

Overview on Data Destruction:

When an organization is divesting a computer, or any other data storage device, the organization enters into a liability position. The contents of that storage device (hard drive, cd-r, floppy disk, etc.) could be as benign as a person's recipe book to as secure as your customer database.

The purpose of data destruction, and more importantly finding a reliable data destruction service provider, is to minimize the risk to your organization.

With the increased risk of identity theft, as well as the more stringent requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Right to Financial Privacy Act (RFPA) and the Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLB), companies are assuming a greater liability for data security.

There are multiple levels of data destruction available, ranging from simple reformatting your drive (also referred to as file deletion, or repartitioning), drive overwriting, and physical destruction of the storage medium. Methodology summaries:

Standard Formatting/Repartitioning:

Standard formatting is the simplest method of drive erasure, and file deletion. The formatting software that ships default with Microsoft® operating systems does not truly delete/destroy data.

Formatting the drive will overlay the original file system (your company's data/information) with a new file system. Unless the drive is completely overwritten, the original contents can easily be retrieved utilizing commonly available software.

The benefit of this method include fast processing time, and is an ideal methodology for an individual consumer who is simply reloading an operating system on their personal computer.

In a corporate environment, this method can be the fast track to disaster.

Triple Overwrite Data Destruction:

This methodology is more time consuming, but insures a higher level of safety for sensitive financial and personal information. The original data set (information on the drive) is overwritten initially by a character (typically all 1s across the drive platter), then overwritten again by the complementary character (all 0s), and then again overwritten with a random character. This method is the standard in the Corporate Data Destruction programs we offer, and utilizes DoD 5220.22M compliant software.

Physical Destruction:

The absolute in data destruction would be physical destruction of the storage medium. Certain clients, and/or information guidelines require this level of information security, and it is the ideal methodology for Top Secret information both in the Public and Corporate sectors.

Current Services offered:

Wichita PC Recycling Center offers only Triple Overwrite data destruction and physical destruction, and has tailored our program to meet each customer's specific needs.
